Understanding SAP HANA Platforms and Services

Introduction

The SAP HANA term is used for a variety of platforms and services, it can stand for:

  • SAP HANA Database
    • on-premises
    • hosted PaaS (Platform as a Service), the on-premises edition hosted for you by a third party.
    • hosted SaaS (Software as a Service), usually as part of SAP S/4HANA Cloud Platform, Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP), Public Edition.
  • SAP S/4HANA Cloud
    • on-premises (On-Site Edition)
    • hosted (Private Edition, SAP HEC (HANA Enterprise Cloud) managed (PaaS), for example, SAP NetWeaver AS ABAP systems)
    • hosted (Public Edition, SAP HCP (S/4HANA Cloud Platform) (SaaS), for example, SAP HCI (HANA Cloud Integration))

For Redwood, SAP HANA Database on-premises and PaaS are to be considered the same, likewise for SAP S/4HANA Cloud On-Site and Private Editions. SAP HANA Cloud Public Edition is the new technology cloud platform, SAP BTP, also known as SAP CPI or SAP HCP.
