Creating Chain Definitions

Chain Definitions can be edited in multiple ways:

  • chain definition editor (displayed below)
  • using the Promotion Module
  • using RedwoodScript

...

This is the main window of the standard chain definition editor, it allows you to create more complex chain definitions with greater ease. You can toggle the standard and basic HTML editor in the user options with the Use basic HTML Chain editor option; see Setting User Parameters.

From here the structure of the chain definition can be edited, and other tabs can be accessed that allow you to change the properties of the various parts:

  • the chain definition itself: the process definitions and the default status handlers.
  • the steps: the step name and precondition function
  • the processes:
    • the process definition and precondition function
    • the parameter mappings
  • testing

Most of the actions can be accessed in several ways:

  • the right-hand-side detail pane acts on the currently selected item.
  • the links in the boxes give access to the chain definition details or the process details.

You can leave the chain definition details pane without saving or canceling the changes. They are stored in memory as long as the browser session exists, they are not committed to the database and have no effect when the chain definition is submitted. However, do not edit the same chain definition in more than one edit screen.

note

The changes are committed to the database only after you choose Save or Save & Close.

Special care needs to be taken when you edit a chain definition which is currently (re)scheduled; the new chain definition will take effect on all processes that have not reached the Dispatched status at modification time.

Tabs

Note that standard chain definition editor supports context-sensitive tabs, this means that when you choose a child chain definition or process definition, you can switch to the tabs of the selected child object. The following list covers the tabs of a chain.
